Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) movie review

Reynold's Deadpool and Jackman's Wolverine collide in an irreverent, hilarious and action-packed adventure. It's like a silly Deadpool comic book come to life.

Deadpool is back! And he brings the long-dead Wolverine along with him! Deadpool & Wolverine is the biggest movie event from Marvel since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Honestly, I thought I was done with Marvel. After the great crescendo it hit with Avengers: Endgame, there was really no way to go but down. Both, emotionally and cinematically. But, Deadpool has a place outside of that universe. In today’s world, where everyone is careful about their perceived persona, Deadpool doesn’t give a damn. When everything you say is insensitive and inappropriate, what will they cancel you for?

Sorry for going off on that tangent. Back to Deadpool & Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and the movie’s producers have fulfilled countless fan prayers by bringing these two iconic characters together for an entire movie. Saying it was a challenge is an understatement since Hugh Jackman bid farewell to the character in 2017’s Logan. Let me tell you this. If you care about the logic behind how they brought Wolverine back to life, this movie is not for you. And if you manage to keep logic out of that bit, then you might as well keep it out for the rest of the movie. Deadpool & Wolverine is no place for logic and physics. It is however a place for a raunchy, hilarious comedy with occasional good action and loads of fan service.

It’s a bit like Indian movies where our suspension of disbelief’s limits are tested to a great extent. The movie also opens with a musical number giving us a taste of what to expect from the following 2 hours. Rooting from a serious conversation with his girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Wade Wilson aka Deadpool wants to be a better person. Not just a man with superhuman abilities but a superhero. But don’t worry about that taking the edge off of Deadpool because it doesn’t last long.

Being irreverent is part of his DNA so it’s never going away. After a meeting with Mr. Paradox (Succession’s Tom himself, Matthew Macfadyen) he sets off on a mission to save the world. He needs help though. He needs Wolverine. Even one from a different universe will do and so he gets the grumpiest, most alcoholic, most angst-ridden one he can find.

Traditionally, Wolverine finds Deadpool annoying but this new one spends half the movie telling him to shut the fuck up. In the other half, he shines. Whatever happened in the previous movies, seeing Hugh Jackman back as the Wolverine is pure joy. Especially, if you’ve been in love with the character since X-Men came out in 2000. And that too, in his iconic yellow suit! They are up against Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova (read the review for their hit show A Murder at the End of the World). Cassandra is Professor Xavier’s miscarried sister who survived to be a super-mutant. She is powerful, angry and destructive.

The duo team up to save the world and shenanigans ensue. But not before they probe their respective regenerative powers. In the first Deadpool, it took days for him to regenerate his hand when it got cut off. Apparently, fragile internal organs heal much faster. Your butts will clench so much with the amount of stabbing and hacking of characters’ private parts you’d think you had a high-intensity Kegel workout. The movie has a high tempo and so do the action scenes. In terms of action, they saved the best for last as the climactic battle is simply outstanding.

Cameos are there for our pleasure so don’t read about them or assume, and watch the movie with an open mind. Best I can say, no legacies get tarnished and they are all incredibly funny. The script has more holes than fingers on your hands but somehow, it doesn’t ruin the whole experience. The movie also tries to be too cute at times, which is annoying because it doesn’t sit well in a Deadpool movie.

The shining star, the reason the Deadpool movies exist and are awesome is Ryan Reynolds. These movies are like fresh batteries for Reynolds as they charge his charm up to 11. Under the Deadpool mask, Reynolds can say and do anything which he makes the most out of it here. He and his writing team take shots at everyone from Disney to Marvel to Will Smith to himself! With the Deadpool movies, Reynolds has created a standalone body of work that will continue to entertain long after the death of the Marvel cinematic universe.

Still of Deadpool and Wolverine walking in slow motion looking bad-ass

Blind Al – ‘I wish fire would find your body and finish the job God was too afraid to do.’

Wade Wilson – ‘If you could hear the look on my face, you’d smell how sad I am.’

Spread the love
